Dozens and dozens of websites participated in the 2010 Countdown to Halloween (this site included), and while they all had great stuff to share, certain sites rose above and beyond to really bring us all some incredible goodies this year. One of those sites was/is Digital Meltd0wn, a site devoted to preserving and posting lost, forgotten and obscure music, scores and soundtracks. In October, DM posted dozens of rare and obscure horror movie scores, including Phantasm, The Thing, Halloween & Halloween 2, Evil Dead 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (just for starters) and a series of collections of UNRELEASED tracks from a variety of horror movies. Honestly, we can’t overstate this enough – you REALLY SHOULD go and start exploring/downloading what DM has posted. This is GREAT STUFF!!!

Better still, DM says they’re going to be doing an “Anti-Christmas Countdown” in December. The Cult can’t WAIT for that…

Rue Morgue Radio brought a couple of cool new versions of favorite classics to The Cult’s attention this week:

When they first started out (before they became one of the premiere industrial acts of the late 80s), Ministry was more of a synth-pop band. You’d have to have been living under a rock never to have heard their anthemic song (Every Day Is) Halloween:

Well I live with snakes and lizards
And other things that go bump in the night
‘Cause to me everyday is Halloween
I’ve given up hiding and started to fight

Well anytime, any place, anywhere that I go all the
People seem to stop and stare they say
“Why are you dressed like it’s Halloween?
You look so absurd, you look so obscene”

O, why can’t I live a life for me?
Why should I take the abuse that’s served?
Why can’t they see they’re just like me?
It’s the same, it’s the same in the whole wide world…

Horror fans, goths and other Persons In Black have embraced this song over the decades for its message of “Hell YEAH every day is Halloween – you got a problem with that?” However, if we’re being honest, the song’s sound was hopelessly 80′s-dated (mmBop Bop)…

UNTIL NOW! Ministry has recorded a new version more in keeping with the sound they’re known for, crunchy guitars and all, and you can grab it for a lousy 99 cents from Amazon right now!

Ministry - Every Day Is Halloween 2010 Version

Meanwhile, Powerglove has given us a brand new hard-rockin’ instrumental version of “This Is Halloween” from The Nightmare Before Christmas. What’s not to love?

Monster Mashup 2010 - Pumpkin' On Your StereoSpecial thanks to Paulo Cheekyboy for reminding The Cult about one of our favorite modern Halloween traditions: Monster Mashups!

For the uninitiated, a mashup is what happens when a DJ takes several different songs and “mashes them up” into a new, hybrid creature (how Frankensteinian!). Monster Mashups add an extra horror/haunted/Halloween aspect, and DJs all over the world have been contributing to an annual compilation that started in 2004 titled, appropriately enough, “Monster Mashup”. Nowhere else will you hear, in the same song, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, The Haunted Mansion’s Ghost Host, Bobby “Boris” Pickett and Lady GaGa.

Now the best part: You can get ALL of the Monster Mashup releases (plus loads of extra goodies) at http://www.monstermashups.co.uk/ – FREE!!

Good friend of the Cult of the Great Pumpkin Jerry “Haunt Rocker” Vayne is no stranger to the haunted house industry, but for those that haven’t already discovered him, do yourselves a favor and visit his site. Not only can you get his particular brand of spooky rock, he’s offering his spooktacular rockin’ versions of Grim Grinning Ghosts from Disney’s Haunted Mansion and The Headless Man from Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow… FREE!

Last year, rock legend (and outspoken Halloween advocate) Alice Cooper released a KICK ASS single called Keepin’ Halloween Alive. However, because it was an iTunes exclusive, and because it’s easy to miss stuff on the internet, and because the internet has a REALLY short attention span, it’s entirely possible you missed this little audio nugget of sheer Halloween AWESOMENESS. So in case you missed it, here is HalloweenAddict.com’s original post about it (can’t improve on this), and a little Public Service Announcement from The Coop Hisself:

Another just-in-time-for-October Halloween musical find, Carpe Noctem’s “Prelude to a Nightmare” will be a welcome addition to the macabre musical library of haunted house and Halloween fans who enjoy the music of Midnight Syndicate, Nox Arcana and Virgil Franklin. Spooky and atmospheric, it’s perfect music for your moldering sanctum!

Prelude to a Nightmare

A mere two months after Nox Arcana released the haunting Theater of Illusion, they have a brand new CD for the Halloween season. Joseph Vargo of Nox Arcana teams again with Jeff Hartz of Buzz-Works to produce the creepy horror soundscape House of Nightmares.

Dark things dwell in the old house by the cemetery, lying in wait for anyone who dares to enter. Unearthly sounds echo from the shadows of the abandoned mansion as sinister incantations unleash ancient horrors to haunt the realm of the living. The CD delivers 19 tracks of spine-tingling sound effects and dark cinematic music to create an eerie atmosphere of lurking terror.

Some of the greatest horror and Halloween seasonal music, audio dramas, sound effects and other spooky audio artifacts ever recorded are also, sadly, no longer available. Thankfully, the internet has charged to the rescue, with blogs and dedicated bloggers who find yesteryear’s spooky sounds, painstakingly convert them to digital formats from old LPs and cassettes, and then post them, often with a bit of background and even cover art!

Following are some of The Great Pumpkin’s favorite sources for ghastly audio ephemera. Good luck and good hunting!

Scar Stuff – Named after the great, cheap, waxy scar-making make-up that you could get at any drug store in the 70′s and 80′s, Scar Stuff was one of the first blogs to really find great stuff and post it online. Sadly, it appears that Jason is no longer posting, and many of the things he’s posted are no longer available, but there’s still stuff to be had, here…

The Mostly Ghostly Music Sharing Blaaaahhhggg – Once a standard blog, the owner of the MGMSB was plagued by spammers and overly-restrictive TOS issues, so he moved everything to a discussion board format. It requires a small investment of time to learn the ropes, but your rewards will be many.

Digital Meltd0wn – While not strictly horror or Halloween, there are dozens of posts that are horror-related, especially featuring out-of-print movie soundtracks.

Vinnie Rattolle’s – Like Digital Meltd0wn, this blog is devoted to offering up weird bits of forgotten culture and, like DM, much of that is horror-related.

The Manchester Morgue – Find many classic horror soundtracks at this one.

Monster Shindig – Not posting much lately, but lots of great stuff in the archives.

These are just a few favorites – you’ll discover more sites linked from those. Have fun! Here’s a classic to start you off – Disney’s Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of The Haunted House! Get it at HERE!

The Great Pumpkin does NOT endorse piracy or theft; that’s not what we’re talking about, here. Whenever possible, you should purchase the stuff you want to listen to from a reputable source. The items offered on these websites, for the most part, were either one-time promotional pieces or ceased production long ago. Either way, this is more like cultural preservation.

Curtis had this to say:

The zero hour rapidly approaches and I’m pleased to announce that our brand new song ‘Grave Robber At Large’ will be premiering May 1st on the free, downloadable Rue Morgue Radio’s Hymns from the House of Horror compilation CD in honour of their 100th issue—we’re track number 13. Hymns From The House Of Horror!

The issues hits newsstands May 1st and includes a small blurb about the song and the downloadable CD itself will be available on rue-morgue.com and ruemorgueradio.com.
